Myanmar's Military Continues To Bomb Towns Amid Deadly Earthquake Crisis

An armed resistance movement against Myanmar's military-run government criticised the junta on Sunday for conducting airstrikes on villages even as the country reels from an earthquake that has killed around 1,700 people. The Karen National Union, one of Myanmar's oldest ethnic armies, said in a statement that the junta "continues to carry out airstrikes targeting civilian areas, even as the population suffers tremendously from the earthquake". The group said that under normal circumstances, the military would be prioritising relief efforts, but instead is focused on "deploying forces to attack its people". A spokesman for the junta did not reply to queries from Reuters about the criticism. Myanmar has been locked in civil war with multiple armed opposition groups since a 2021 coup, when the military seized power from the elected government of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. Shortly after Friday's devastating earthquake, military jets l...

Japanese Scientists Develop New Plastic That Dissolves In Saltwater

Plastics are known for their durability and strength, making them ideal for everyday use. However, their long-lasting nature becomes a significant environmental issue when they end up in nature. Traditional plastics, made with strong covalent bonds, are difficult to break down and can remain in the environment for decades or even centuries, causing harm to wildlife and humans through microplastics. In an effort to tackle this problem, Researchers led by Takuzo Aida at the RIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science (CEMS) in Japan, have developed a new type of plastic that maintains its strength during use but dissolves quickly in saltwater. Once dissolved, the plastic breaks down into harmless compounds, reducing the environmental impact. In their new study, Aida and his team focused on solving this problem with supramolecular plastics-polymers with structures held together by reversible interactions. The new plastics were made by combining two ionic monomers that form cross-linked s...

"These Things...": Thakur's Blunt Message On Getting Unsold In IPL Auction

Shardul Thakur continued his dream comeback with a four-wicket haul to help Lucknow Super Giants restrict a power-packed Sunrisers Hyderabad to 190 for nine in an IPL match on Thursday. Opting to bowl, Shardul (4/34) gave LSG a fiery start, removing Abishek Sharma and last match centurion Ishan Kishan in consecutive balls in the third over. Shardul sent packing Sharma with a short delivery before getting Ishan Kishan caught behind off an innocuous delivery down the leg side. Travis Head (47 off 28), however, looked in ominous form as he took the attack to the opposition and used his brute power to deal in boundaries and sixes. Shardul Thakur, after the innings ended, opened up on not getting picked up by any team in the IPL 2025 mega auction. Thakur only joined LSG after Mohsin Khan was ruled out due to injury.  "I feel all these things happen in cricket. It was a bad day for me in the auction (I didn't get picked by any franchise.) LSG was the one who approached me first...

50 Years Later, US Murder Mystery Solved Through Old Tape And Photo

Image
A 1975 murder case of Maryland woman Roseann Sturtz has been solved, thanks in part to a decades-old cassette tape and a photograph of the victim. The cold case , which involved Sturtz's strangulation after meeting her attacker at a bar on August 24, 1975, remained a mystery for decades until Howard County police reopened the investigation late last year. According to the New York Post , detectives uncovered evidence pointing to Charles William Davis Jr, a convicted killer already incarcerated, as the perpetrator. A key piece of evidence was a 1981 audio tape, in which Davis, then an inmate at Jessup Correctional Institute, discussed the murder in exchange for immunity from prosecution. Initially, Davis was unable to identify Sturtz from a photo taken several years before her murder. However, 44 years later, Howard County police Cpl. Wade Zufall reinterviewed Davis, showing him a more recent photo of Sturtz, taken just a month before her murder. This time, Davis recognized her an...

'Easier To Deal With Russia Than Ukraine To End War': Donald Trump

Trump Suspends Nearly All Mexico Tariffs Until April 2

Trump said fresh tariffs targeting Mexico would not apply to trade falling under a pact between the United States, Mexico and Canada for now, adding: "This Agreement is until April 2nd." On April 2, Canadian and Mexican goods could still face reciprocal levies. Trump said on Truth Social of his deal: "I did this as an accommodation, and out of respect for, President Sheinbaum. Jack Daniel's CEO Says Canada Pulling US Alcohol 'Worse Than Tariff'

A trade dispute between Canada and the US has escalated, with several Canadian provinces pulling American-made alcohol from store shelves. The move is a direct response to the Trump administration's imposition of 25% tariffs on Canadian goods. Lawson Whiting, CEO of Brown-Forman, the company behind Jack Daniel's, has denounced the Canadian retaliation, calling it "worse than tariffs" and "disproportionate" to the US levies. "I mean, that's worse than a tariff, because it's literally taking your sales away, completely removing our products from the shelves," Whiting said. The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO), one of the world's largest alcohol buyers, removed US-made drinks from its shelves on Tuesday. Ontario Premier Doug Ford revealed that the LCBO sells nearly $1 billion worth of US alcohol annually, emphasising that all these products are now off the shelves. "Delimitation Separate From Population Management": Chandrababu Naidu

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday sought to dispel confusion around delimitation, asserting that it is a separate issue from population management and should not be linked to the ongoing political discussions. "Delimitation is a continuous process, occurring once in 25 years," Naidu told reporters here. "Don't link all issues at a time. Delimitation and population management are different. I am talking about national interest," he added. Discussing the ongoing political debates, Naidu emphasised, "There are reservations, and we will accommodate them. But don't link all issues at a time." Speaking about India's demographic potential, Naidu highlighted the country's unique position in the global demographic landscape, describing India as having the "biggest advantage of demographic dividend".
