Divider-Crossing, Wrong-Side Driving Cause 3-Bike Collision, 1 Killed

A series of unfortunate events led to three motorcycles colliding with each other in Bihar, killing one and critically injuring two others. A video of the accident, which took place near Ara in Bhojpur district at 4.40 pm on Friday, shows one of the bikers riding over the divider and attempting to cross traffic on the other side of the four-lane road. The biker moves ahead, not realising that there is another speeding bike approaching him from the wrong side. The other motorcycle, with a rider and a pillion, rams the man's bike with such force that it goes and hits another two-wheeler - whose rider was driving slowly and on the right side. The man who started off the chain of events by crossing the divider can be seen getting up and walking towards the wreckage of the two other bikes - where two other men stand up as well - before turning back. Police said one person has been killed in the accident and two suffered serious injuries. The injured people have been referred to the P...

Liquor Ban In J&K? Signature Campaign, Posters, Spark Massive Row

Jammu and Kashmir is seeing a fresh political row over liquor ban - an issue that came up in 2016 but got thumbs downed by Mehbooba Mufti's ruling People's Democratic Party. Now the battlelines have been re-drawn, with the PDP spearheading the demand for a ban. The party has started a signature campaign in support of the ban and it is the ruling National Conference that is accusing it of hypocrisy. Over the weekend, posters came up across Srinagar, supporting the ban and calling upon tourists to "respect local culture and traditions". Police action to remove the posters has been questioned by the Opposition. The matter is expected to dominate the assembly in the budget session which begins on March 3. Two members - one of the PDP and one from the National Conference -- have submitted bills to ban liquor. PDP's Fayaz Ahamd Mir, National Conference's Ahsan Pardesi and a third MLA -- Awami Ittehad Party's (AIP) Sheikh Khursheed Ahmad - have moved separate ...

Ganga Water At Kumbh's Sangam Unsafe On Another Parameter Too: Data

The Ganga water at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, where lakhs of people are taking a holy dip every day during the ongoing Maha Kumbh, is currently unsafe for bathing as it exceeds the prescribed limit for biological oxygen demand (BOD), a key parameter to determine water quality, according to government data. BOD refers to the amount of oxygen required by aerobic microorganisms to break down organic material in a water body. A higher BOD level indicates more organic content in the water. River water is considered fit for bathing if the BOD level is less than 3 milligrams per litre. The Central Pollution Control Board recently told the National Green Tribunal that several locations in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj do not conform to the primary water quality standards for bathing with respect to faecal coliform levels. However, it said that the river water quality met the bathing criteria in terms of BOD after January 13 "due to freshwater intrusion at upstream locations....

However, PTI has learnt about the core team that is working with Bumrah at Bengaluru, as it tries its best to get one of the biggest match-winners of the Indian cricket team back on the park. Odds Of Asteroid The Size Of Football Field Hitting Earth Increased Yet Again

Scientists have revised the odds of asteroid 2024 YR4 colliding with Earth when it makes its closest pass on December 22, 2032. According to NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies (Cneos) the chances of a strike by the space rock, which is roughly the size of a football field, have been calculated at 2.3 per cent which is significantly greater than the 1.3 per cent chance given by the European Space Agency (ESA), barely a week ago. The unassuming asteroid was first spotted in late December by scientists at the NASA-funded Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System station in Chile. Since then, 2024 YR4 has become a hot topic of discussion among the scientific community. The asteroid, measuring around 130 to 300 feet across, may not be big enough to cause a civilization collapse upon the impact but it is big enough to inflict major damage to a big city. It ranks as a 3 on the Torino Impact Hazard Scale, which classifies asteroids on a scale of 0 to 10 to capture the likel...

US Government Vessels To Sail Through Panama Canal Without Fees

A Blank South Korea? New North Korea Map Piques Interest Online

The tension between North and South Korea is legendary. Since the Korean War in the 1950s, reconciliation efforts have not been successful. And now, a photo of North Korea's map circulating on the internet has baffled policy researchers and other users. The map has been shared on the Chinese social media platform RedNote (Xiaohongshu) and claims the revised map was shared in April 2024, as per a report in Newsweek. It marks a major shift in the country's policy on unification by showing the Korean Peninsula divided into two separate parts, further driving home North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's break from the long-standing goal of eventual reunification with the South. For decades, Pyongyang had demanded to be reunited with the South but always on its terms. The three-year Korean War, which started when communist North invaded South, ended in an armistice in 1953 without a peace treaty ever being signed. Still, Pyongyang kept preaching reunification for many years afterwar...

Mr Kejriwal's remarks, made last week in the run-up to the election, has triggered a huge political row and the matter has even reached the Election Commission. The BJP, AAP and the Congress have each dared the other to drink the water and Mr Kejriwal has even extended the challenge to the Election Commission, drawing a strong reprimand. In response to the poll body's demand for hard evidence of his claim against Haryana, Mr Kejriwal had written back, "We have four bo...
